You Can Now Recycle Your Old Barbie Doll And Other Mattel Toys!
If you have some vintage toys from the 90s, like that old Barbie doll or G.I. Joe, there’s good news. Mattel wants to recycle your old toys.
The 76-year-old toy company has launched a pilot program called “Mattel PlayBack”. The program recovers and reuses materials in old toys for future Mattel products. The new effort is part of the company focusing more on sustainability. By 2030, Mattel wants to use 100% recycled, recyclable or bio-based plastic materials across all of its products and packaging.
To participate in the program, visit Mattel’s website. There consumers can print a free shipping label, and pack and mail their toys back to the company. Mattel will then sort and separate toys by material type, process and recycle them.
If your toy cannot be repurposed as recycled content in new toys, it’ll either be downcycled into other plastic products or converted from waste to energy.
The program will initially only be available in the United States and Canada, but the company is launching similar PlayBack programs in France, Germany and the United Kingdom with a third-party partner.
And Mattel isn’t alone in its effort to be more environmentally conscious. Many other large toy companies are trying to become more eco-friendly after decades of relying on plastic for years in their products and packaging.
