Have You Seen An Armadillo In North Carolina? If So Report It
If you have never seen an Armadillo in North Carolina, then chances are you have never expected to see one. When you think of wildlife in the area, they aren’t some that typically cross your mind. But sightings have been reported as recently as February 2023. The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission is asking for the public to report any sightings of nine-banded armadillos to the agency. This is in order to help them monitor the range expansion of armadillos in the area. Sightings can be reported to armadillo@ncwildlife.org. Please include a photo if you have one, the date and time the animal was observed, as well as as accurate of a location as you are able to provide.
The nine-banded armadillo is the only armadillo species found in the Southeast United States. It has been slowly expanding it’s reach and is believed to have arrived in North Carolina in the early 2,000s. According to the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission the “Nine-banded Armadillo is a unique mammal, with its armor-like skin and long, scaly tail. It is named for the bands, which are not always 9 it can range from 7-11, across its midsection. There have been 119 reported sightings of armadillos in North Carolina.
