Record Breaking 500-Pound Swordfish Caught Off North Carolina Coast
There’s a good catch, and then there’s a record-breaking good catch. And this one was the latter. A 500-pound swordfish was caught off the coast of Morehead City. The fish was reeled in by father and son pair Cary and Brandon Carney. The duo was fishing 50-60 miles off the North Carolina coast in water with a 1,300-foot depth. That’s according to reports from North Carolina Marine Fisheries. It took a 65-pound line and some strength to hand crank the 500-pound swordfish. Because of course, the electric rod blew a fuse at exactly the wrong time. Though it only makes the Carneys story that much more impressive!
Sport Fishing Magazine reports that Chris spent 2.5 hours reeling in the swordfish. During that time the fishing boat traveled 12 miles from the fight. But 2.5 hours and 12 miles later the fish was thrust into the boat. They took it to be weighed at EJQ where it weighed in at 504 pounds, which is a new state record. It understandable took a fork list to get off of their boat. The bill of the catch measured a whopping 47 inches long.
The Carneys may need a new house if they want to put that fish on the wall! And here I was impressed at age 4 when I somehow managed to catch a probably 5-inch tuna. My parents thought maybe it was my calling and took me to the mountains to try again. Turns out that was a fluke! I’ll hitch a ride on the boat though, even one that travels 12 miles during the catch.
