A Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Officer Just Returning From Maternity Leave Killed In Tractor-Trailer Crash
I didn’t know Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Officer Mia Goodwin, but my heart honestly hurts after hearing she lost her life on Interstate-85, near W.T. Harris Blvd. I just kept thinking she was a mother of three small children – including a 4-month old. She had just returned to work after being on maternity leave. I thought she likely was preparing for the holidays with her family. And I thought “Her kids have no idea.”
Police say Goodwin had just arrived on the scene of an earlier accident, when two tractor trailer trucks collided. Those trucks hit vehicles that then struck Goodwin and other police cars on the scene. Goodwin was killed; three other officers were hurt.
Goodwin was just 33 years old and joined CMPD in 2015. She leaves behind a husband – Brenton Goodwin who is a firefighter; her three children — a 3 year old, 1 year old and 4 months old.
Others around the state are expressing their heartfelt sorrow for Goodwin and her family. North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper tweeted his support and sympathy; Charlotte’s mayor Vi Lyles posted a video expressing her condolences; Gastonia police department tweeted their sorrows as well as Union County.
Police have not said if any charges will be filed. Two GoFundMe campaigns have been established to support the Goodwin family — Back The Blue NC and City Councilman Tariq Bokhari.
