12 Shot At West Charlotte Block Party; Community Organizers Meet For Answers

It was an “unorganized” Juneteenth celebration, that turned ugly really fast. Three people were killed, 11 hurt at a block party early Monday morning on Beatties Ford Road near Catherine Simmons Avenue. Charlotte-Mecklenburg police say over 100 rounds were fired into a crown of about 4oo people.
In the melee, officials say 29-year-old Kelly Miller and 28-year-old Christopher Antonio Gleaton were shot and killed. Police say they were initially called to the area after hearing a pedestrian may have been hit, but when officers arrived they found hundreds of people in the streets and shots being fired.
Police are a bit frustrated as they try to find out who is behind the shots being fired. Out of the 400 people present, police say there has not been one witness.
Meanwhile, there are some in the community who are calling for change. Organizers of the Juneteenth Liberation Drive Thru are holding a press conference (Monday, June 22 @ 4pm) to discuss the recent violence off Beatties Ford Road. The organizers are made up of various community groups in the Historic West End corridor and want to move forward and advance the priorities of the area following the violence.
