Could The U.S. Be Running Out Of Meat? Tyson Foods Closing Plants
JERUSALEM - MARCH 20: Orthodox Jewish rabbis clean slaughtered chickens at the Jerusalem Chicken Factory March 20, 2006 in Jerusalem, Israel. Chickens are processed to make sure they are Kosher according to Jewish dietary laws. According to Israeli media, Bird Flu threatens about 40% of Israel's poultry sector if the Avian Flu continues to depress sales. (Photo by Paula Bronstein/Getty Images)
Remember, when the pandemic first started and everyone was panicking that there wouldn’t be enough toilet paper or paper towels? And officials with the USDA scoffed at the idea that the nation’s food supply would be in trouble? Well, it looks like we could be there — with meat, that is.
Several meat processing plants across the U.S. are suspending operations because of the coronavirus. And that has a trickle-down effect. Meat plants aren’t able to process chickens for example because there are no employees working to process the meat. And no processed meat means, thousands of pounds of meat will have to be destroyed – because, after all, who wants potentially dangerously tainted meat?
And some parts of the U.S. are already feeling the effect. For example, in Delaware and Maryland, some 2 million chickens are set to be euthanized because there’s no one at the plants to process the chicken. Man! Poor chickens.
Maybe being a vegan isn’t so bad. I’m just sayin’.
