Pet Owners Watch Out, Coyotes In Charlotte are Getting Much Bolder
You might hear them more than see them, but they’re definitely out there. Coyotes have infiltrated neighborhoods all over Charlotte and they don’t care who knows it. I hear them howling from the woods in my neighborhood frequently, and I’ve even seen them on the street a couple of times.
Once timid, Charlotte’s urban coyotes have become bolder. Many city residents have reported seeing them out in the open and that has pet owners worried. Coyotes will attack cats and smaller dogs for food. However, the North Carolina Wildlife Commission says coyotes rarely go after people. Still, it doesn’t hurt to be prepared if you come face to face with one. Here are a few tips:
- If you see a coyote, stand tall, make loud noises, and wave your arms to scare them away.
- If you have a rock or stick handy, throw it towards the coyote.
- Don’t run away. That could trigger the coyote’s instinct to chase. They love to chase. Just ask a roadrunner.
