Gospel Artist Rudy Currence Holds On To His Rock Hill Roots
When I first met Rudy Currence he was a bright, curly-haired and eager ‘talented teen’ who had big dreams of making it big! Fast-forward nearly two decades later, he’s made good with that dream — he’s a Grammy award-winning artist, songwriter, producer and he’s still going!
Back in the earlier years, I remember the Rock Hill, SC native would travel to local radio stations (like ours) with his keyboard in tow. He would belt out R&B tunes in a smooth and very mature-sounding voice. He also went by the name “Rudy.” Today, he still possesses the passion for music, though his sound has changed. Rudy says he realized in his spiritual walk, he was called to sing gospel so he let go of R&B.
And he doesn’t regret it. Since his gospel trek, the road has been sweet. He is a Grammy & Dove Award Winning Producer, Grammy Nominated Writer, a two-time #1 Billboard Artist with a new album “Stained Glass Windows”. The son of a preacher, Rudy says going back to his church roots wasn’t very difficult. And when he comes back home to the South that makes the journey all the more sweet.
Rudy is true to his roots, too. He declares with much confidence, he “carries the Carolinas with him everywhere he goes.” I got a chance to chop it up with Rudy to talk about his latest projects. And learned he still has that glow!
