One of R&B’s most infamous singers is now a resident of the Tar Heel State. R. Kelly is serving time at a federal facility in Butner, NC.
According to the Federal Bureau of Prisons, Kelly was transferred to the Federal Correctional Institution Butner, Medium I facility. He was being held in Chicago where he was serving 20 years for sex trafficking. Butner is a medium security prison with over 700 inmates. The complex is just north of the Raleigh-Durham area. R. Kelly isn’t the only famous name to reside there. Other famous criminals include the “Unabomber” Ted Kaczynski and the late Bernie Madoff who was the mastermind behind the Ponzi scheme.
The 56-year-old singer is serving time after being convicted of child pornography and engaging in criminal sexual activity with a minor. He was already serving a 30-year sentence on racketeering and sex trafficking charges after being convicted in New York in September 2021.
Prosecutors says Kelly used his celebrity status to “target girls, boys, and young women for his own sexual gratification.”
