If you're in the market for a computer whether it's for school or job, the Charlotte Mecklenburg library has you covered. Beginning Thursday, January 19 the library system will start offering free laptops through an application process.

The library system has 20,000 refurbished laptops it will offer to adults who are eligible. Each free laptop includes software that is compatible with many Windows programs like Microsoft Office. The computers will also have on-device internet filtration software. Library officials say no technical support will be provided and you won't be able to get any replacements of computers.

How To Qualify For Free Laptop?

Here are a few qualifications to get your free laptop. Applicants must:

  • be 18 years  or older
  • live in Mecklenburg County with proof of residency
  • have an access to an active email address
  • have a photo ID card
  • must sign a statement attesting you don't have technology to meet your educational/informational needs

Applications are now available online. Applications can be filled out using a smartphone or by visiting a library branch.

If you are an approved applicant, you will receive a confirmation within 7-10 business days. Then you will sign up for a distribution date and time through that confirmation email.
