When one of Charlotte's landmark and historic restaurants, Prices Chicken Coop, closed suddenly last week, it sent many in a frenzy. Hundreds of Chicken Coop customers, old and new, lined outside the restaurant. They all wanted their last taste of Price's 'southern fried chicken.'
Witnessing that inspired me to take a look at some of Charlotte's oldest restaurants (and with a little help from The Charlotte Observer), I put together a list of my personal favorites. And not in any particular order.
1. Brooks' Sandwich House - In NoDa - Run by Brooks brothers (one brother was tragically killed in 2019)
The bomb hamburger! It's made the old-fashioned way in which it looks like they shape out the burgers by hand
2. Arthur's Wine Shop/Arthur's Restaurant - Inside Belk at SouthPark Mall
Love the mushroom and swiss burger there - it's a classic. Have a nice glass of red while you're at it!
3. South21 Drive-In - Off East Independence Blvd.
Good burgers and a mean fish plate with fries
4. The Open Kitchen - West Morehead Street, Wesley Heights Neighborhood
If you're in the mood for some authentic Italian food, this is the spot. Love the lasagna!
5. Providence Road Sundries - Providence Road in Myers Park Neighborhood
It's the spot for me for brunch! The mimosas are on point, too!
