South Carolina Man Becomes Carolina Panthers First Black Gameday DJ
It’s a dream come true for a South Carolina man who has become the Carolina Panthers’ first Black gameday DJ. Nathanial Perkins’ hometown is Columbia, S.C. But, he will be spending more time in the Queen City these days inside Bank of America stadium, keeping the crowd hyped as the pre-game DJ.
Perkins goes by the name ‘DJ Carolina X’. He tells QCity Metro he never thought he’d land this high-profile gig. Afterall, it was 10 years ago that deejaying was a ‘side hustle’ for him. He says he was able to hone his skills while attending Benedict College. He used those ‘mixing’ skills to bring the energy to parties and other events. And eventually, those ‘skills’ landed him alongside some pretty big celebrity names in the music industry such as Gucci Mane and 21 Savage.
Perkins got his first big start from a promoter he met in 2015. The promoter offered him the chance to play before thousands of students from several of the big schools in the Texas area during the popular spring break. And the opportunities have continued to come. From radio station gigs to hosting events for ESPN, the Charlotte Hornets and the Charlotte Knights, to traveling to deejay in other countries like Bermuda and Japan.
Perkins and his wife have since taken the leap and left the Palmetto state for the Queen City. They now live in Charlotte. And once the Carolina Panthers 2024 regular season begins, DJ Carolina X is who fans will ‘jam’ to while in the stadium. He’ll play before each game as the pre-game DJ. And he’s making history doing it, as he will be the first Black DJ to officially join as a gameday DJ.
I’d say that’s a dream worth waiting for.
