This North Carolina City Has The Nation’s 8th Worst Drivers
We all love confirmation bias, and to anyone who complains about Charlotte drivers, this is for you. A new study by The Zebra ranked the US cities with the worst drivers. And you’re not crazy Charlotte is right there among the worst. The largest city in North Carolina has the nation’s 8th worst drivers. This ranking is out of the 50 most populous cities in the United States. They compared each of those cities across 5 metrics to create these rankings. These included:
- Likelihood of collision
- Alcohol-impaired driving fatalities
- Speeding-related fatalities by state
- Annual increase in auto insurance premium after DUI
- Annual increase in auto insurance premium after
Based on these five factors Charlotte is the 8th worst city for drivers. Missing from the list as a whole? New York City-a place you couldn’t pay me to drive in! According to the numbers here’s how Charlotte scored:
- Likelihood of collision: 36%
- Alcohol-impaired driving fatalities by state (per 100k people): 4.1
- Speeding-related fatalities by state (2012-2021): 478
- Annual increase in auto insurance premium after DUI: $4,479
- Annual increase in auto insurance premium after reckless driving: $1,290
Charlotte drivers have over a 1/3 higher likelihood of getting into an automobile accident when compared to the entire nation. I can think of numerous reasons that may be. The constant running of red lights, taking 4-way stops as a suggestion, rarely using turn signals, weaving in and out of traffic at 15 mph faster than the speed limit on residential roads. Those all probably have something to do with it. This data also suggests driving under the influence may be a factor as well. (Don’t do it, pay for the Uber it’s not worth the risk!) There is also a significant number of speed-related fatalities in the state, something that can easily be avoided as well.
