5 Miles 12 Donuts Krispy Kreme Challenge Returns To North Carolina This Weekend
Would you run 2.5 miles, eat a dozen doughnuts, then run 2.5 more miles? All within under an hour? If so then this weekend is your weekend. It’s all part of the Krispy Kreme Challenge this Saturday in Raleigh. As a graduate of NC State it is a right of passage to participate in. So of course I’ve done it (more than once). This year marks the 20th year of the race which has two parts. You can choose to do the full challenge as described above. Or just run and eat however many doughnuts you want- my choice. One time I even tried to run back with the box of the rest of the doughnuts.
The “Challenge” was initially just between 10 friends but it has now grown to be known nationally. And for great reason, there is nothing else quite like it. Money raised goes to the North Carolina Children’s Hospital and donations have exceeded $2 million throughout the race’s history.
The Krispy Kreme Challenge begins at NC State’s Memorial Belltower. The journey then takes runners 2.5 miles through historic downtown Raleigh to Krispy Kreme at the intersection of Peace and Person Streets. There the full challenge participants where they attempt to consume one dozen original glazed doughnuts. Strategies include mashing the doughnuts together, sometimes pouring water on them, and just taking one for the team and eating all twelve. That’s 2400 calories in case you’re wondering. (The last time I ran it I calculated the calories I’d burn running and only ate enough doughnuts I’d still burn some). Then the hard part, running back to the bell tower.
Sound like something you’d like to try? I’m not a runner (at all) but I have to say it’s a good time! And again it’s a right of passage. Register to participate and learn more about the 2024 Krispy Kreme Challenge here.
