Watch: North Carolina High School Alumni Stars In New Mean Girls Trailer

What does a high school in North Carolina have to do with Mean Girls– one of the greatest high school films of all time? Just ask the actress playing Regina George. Listen I’ll be the first to admit I’m not a huge movie person. I love a good chick flick or comedy. But we don’t seem to get too many of those currently. But the 2000s were prime movie years in my opinion. And one of the best of the best? Mean Girls. It’s remained one of my favorite movies to this day. And I can quote the entirety of the film. There are too many classic moments. So when the news broke that there was a remake musical version of the classic film, I was interested, to say the least. As a theatre fan, I have also seen the musical version of Mean Girls, which I very much enjoyed. As well as the modern-day updates it made.

And that’s what this new version of Mean Girls will be. The musical interpretation is once again directed by Tina Fey (who of course is reprising her role of Ms. Norbury). But this one has a little bit of a local connection as well. Renee Rapp who attended high school in North Carolina stars in the new Mean Girls movie, in the role of queen bee Regina George. Rapp attended Charlotte’s Hopewell High School and then transferred to Northwest School of the Arts.

In addition to Rapp, the movie will feature the following names in the iconic roles- Angourie Rice as Cady, Auli’i Cravalho as Janis, Jaquel Spivey as Damian, Anantika as Karen, and Bebe Wood as Gretchen. Tim Meadows is also returning as Principal Duvall. There are rumors that original plastics could be making cameos in the film as well. I’m going to need these rumors to be true. It’s a need not a want at this point. The original film came out almost 20 years ago (HOW?) on April 20, 2004. It starred Lindsey Lohan as Cady, Rachel McAdams as Regina, Amanda Seyfried as Karen, and Lacey Chabert as Gretchen.

I personally cannot wait to see this one, and the fact that there is a North Carolina connection to the new Mean Girls movie just makes it even more fetch. See it in theaters on January 12th! Though not having it come out on October 3rd may be a missed opportunity.

The 9 Most Quotable Mean Girls Moments For Mean Girls Day

It’s October 3rd aka a national holiday-Mean Girls Day! Because, if you’re a fan of the movie you know that on October 3rd Aaron Samuels asked Cady Heron what day it was. And the rest is history. It’s one of the most beloved, and quotable films of all time. The movie was released on April 4th, 2004, and is still a cultural phenomenon to this day. The film starred an A list cast including Lindsey Lohan, Rachel McAdams, Tina Fey, Amy Pohler, and Amanda Seyfried among others. It’s the perfect capsule of early 2000s culture and fashion, some of which is making a comeback in 2023. Think Juicy Couture, pink mini skirts, and more.

The story of high school cliques and experiences can be relevant to any generation. The screenplay was written by Fey and Pohler and based loosely on the book Queen Bees and Wannabes by Rosalind Wiseman, though in a much more comedic fashion. It’s stood the test of time, even becoming a Broadway musical. But it’s the quotes that truly make Mean Girls, Mean Girls. At this point I could probably quote the entire movie. So choosing just 9 of the most quotable moments was tough for me. But I think these are certainly some of the most memorable moments from the beloved film.

    Damian’s introduction of Gretchen and her hair is anything but a secret. Ironic that Gretchen’s hair is full of secrets that she doesn’t know how to keep.

  • Raise Your Hand If You Have Ever Been Personally Victimized By Regina George

    Who hasn’t been personally victimized by Regina George or a similar mean girl? If you haven’t it probably means you are Regina.

    There must be something you’re good at Karen. At least she was able to put her special talent to work doing the morning weather reports. There is a place for everyone!
