JD The Diva Says VP-Elect Kamela Harris Debunks The Myth Of The ‘Angry Black Woman’
I, like many of my friends and colleagues of color were in complete awe after witnessing Kamela Harris become the most powerful woman in our country. Yes, she’s a ‘sistah’! However, she’s not just any ‘sistah’, she is a successful attorney, Attorney General, a graduate of an HBCU (Howard University) and a greek having pledged with the highly-esteemed sorority of Alpha Kappa Alpha, Inc. And that’s not all. Harris is a blend of cultures. She’s Indian, South Asian, Afro-Jamaican and African-American.
I AM NOT THE ANGRY BLACK WOMAN
For me Kamela Harris as VP means a major change in the game for women of color. It’s a change in perspective of women who look like me. As an African-American woman, many times society places us low on the totem pole. Many times we are infamously called “the angry Black woman”. Kamela Harris has the ability to shift how the world sees us (women of color).
Harris is a symbol of who we are. We are intelligent, driven, passionate, compassionate, motivated, nurturing and go-getters who can GET the job done! We are NOT angry, promiscuous, lazy or attitudinal. During her campaign, Harris’ demeanor alone showed the world women of color are smart, sophisticated, poised, and have the ability to lead.
Seeing Harris become the nation’s highest ranking female elected official, I’m excited about the possibilities of who we all can be. And it’s about time. In general, we as women no longer have to be just a passenger in the car, we can drive it, too!
