Woman In ‘Lose Yo Job” Viral Video Says It Changed Her Life (VIDEO)
PHILADELPHIA, PA - JULY 31: Police keep watch in an area near what was a heroin shooting gallery in the Kensington section of Philadelphia which has become a hub for heroin use on July 31, 2017 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Today was the first day of a long anticipated clean-up of one of the largest open air drug markets on the East Coast. Hundreds of outreach workers, city employees and Conrail workers started to clear an area of heroin users from a stretch of train tracks in Philadelphia's Kensington section known as El Campamento. Over 900 people died last year in Philadelphia from opioid overdoses, a 30 percent increase from 2015. As the epidemic shows no signs of weakening, the number of fatalities this year is expected to surpass last year's numbers. Heroin use has doubled across the country since 2010, according to the DEA, part of an epidemic of opioid abuse that began in the 1990s, when doctors began prescribing higher doses of powerful painkillers. You probably saw that video of an African American woman who was being detained by a police officer and started singing a rather catchy song that she made up – “You about to lose your job.” Anyway, 27-year-old Johnniqua Charles of Dillon, S.C. says she was homeless, had an addiction problem, and was estranged from her family.
Well, since that video went viral, she says her life has turned around. Charles said she’d been doing sex work to survive and hadn’t spoken to her family in months. They were taking care of her 3-year-old son. She’s now living with her family and trying to create a better life for herself.
Charles says her sister helped her set up an Instagram account and she started selling t-shirts. Her sister even created a GoFundMe account that’s so far has raised more than $30,000 according to BuzzFeed News. The money will go to Charles and her son. A colleague of the officer who is detaining Charles in the video filmed the incident because the officer’s body camera wasn’t working. That colleague says he posted it on Facebook because Charles rap was pretty good and he says he’d wish he had a beat to it.
For the record, Charles was never arrested after the incident.
