With warmer weather approaching, it’s time to satisfy your sweet tooth with some good ole fashioned ice cream. And look no further than these Black-owned ice cream brands.

They stand out beyond the basic vanilla and chocolate flavors. These ice cream brands are unique in a number of ways. Besides being created and owned by African-Americans, the founders pride themselves on using fresh ingredients infused with a bit of taste from the South.

These are no ordinary ice creams. In fact, many of the owners have created award-winning flavors. They come in both traditional and non-dairy formulas. In addition to their unique taste, they are breaking barriers as some of the first Black-owned ice cream brands in mass production. And they are sold nationwide.

  • Creamalicious

     

    Founder Chef Liz Rogers created unique flavors like peach cobbler and sweet potato pies.  Creamalicious turns southern favorites into ice cream. This dessert is available at Target and WalMart stores nationwide.

  • JD's Vegan

    This may surprise, but mega producer Jermaine Dupri is behind this brand. It’s a collection of dairy-free, all natural frozen desserts that are completely vegan. The creamy snack is free of animal milk or creamers, artificial flavors or sweeteners. Find this brand at WalMart stores and online nationwide.

     

     

  • Whipped Urban Dessert Lab

    Whipped Urban dessert lab

    Courtney Blagrove, and Zan B. R., call themselves ‘radical ice cream makers’. The sisters own NYC’s first oat milk ice cream shop, located in the city’s Lower East Side.

  • Howdy Homemade

    Rapper Trae the Truth is behind this brand. He opened the Howdy Homemade ice cream shop in Katy, Texas back in the summer of 2021. The store will exclusively hire employees with special needs and give them the opportunity to be active in the workforce. The Howdy chain also has locations is Colorado, North Carolina, and Indiana and offers catering for parties.

  • Mikey Likes It Ice Cream

    This so called “pop-cultured inspired ice cream shop has some big names as fans. Rapper and billionaire Jay-Z as well as former First Lady Hillary Clinton love it. Michael “Mikey” Cole is the founder and owner of Mikey Likes It Ice Cream who says he wants to push the boundaries in the ice cream industry.

     

  • Shawn Michelle's Homemade Ice Cream

    Based in Chicago, Shawn Michelle’s Homemade Ice Cream gets high praise from former First Lady Michelle Obama as well as the Food Network. It was founded by a husband and wife team — Yahya and Nataki Muhammad who want their cream to take you back to that feeling of eating ice cream as a kid.
