R. Kelly’s Daughter Speaks In Upcoming Documentary
What might it be like to be the daughter of a convicted sex criminal? Joanne Kelly, daughter of disgraced superstar R. Kelly, discusses her father in an upcoming documentary, R. Kelly’s Karma: A Daughter’s Journey which will air on the Tvei Network.
In the film’s trailer, Joanne describes how her father’s actions “changed my whole life,” as she discusses their broken relationship. We’ll note that the trailer is difficult to watch and might be triggering.
“Nobody wants to be the child of the father that is out here hurting women and children,” says Joanne. Her interviews are heartbreaking to watch and she’s often tearing up in them. “He knows exactly why we can’t have the relationship that we would have liked to have with him.”
“He was my everything,” she says. “For a long time, I didn’t even want to believe that it happened. I didn’t know that, even if he was a bad person, that he would do something to me.”
She adds, “If my son asks questions, I’m going to be as truthful as possible. And I will not be taking my son to prison to meet his grandfather.”Joanne and her siblings’ mother, Drea Kelly, is R. Kelly’s ex-wife. She was also interviewed. “Just because you’re not a good husband, doesn’t mean you can’t be a good father,” she says, tearfully. “And the fact that he didn’t even try. What he did to me, he did to me. But you didn’t have to do it to my damn kids.”
R. Kelly was sentenced to over 30 years in prison last year. He remains held in the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Chicago.
R. Kelly’s Karma: A Daughter’s Journey airs on October 11, 2024 on the Tvei Network. Watch the trailer below. If you or someone you know has been a victim of sexual abuse, text “strength” to the Crisis Text Line at 741-741 to be connected to a certified crisis counselor.
