Ashanti and Nelly have been married for half a year, according to public records obtained by gossip website TMZ. However, Ashanti is letting fans in on an adorable and hilarious tidbit of information about the day the “Grillz” rapper asked her to be his wife.

In a new interview with ET, the “Rock With U” singer, 43, said the way he asked her was “such a beautiful, intimate moment.” Making a note that they weren’t “dressy,” the rekindled couple were watching TV in bed while wearing his T-shirt and boxers. Ashanti was “completely” shocked that this was the moment Nelly decided to propose.
Overcome with emotion, she recalled never thinking this would have happened in a “million years” after their breakup about ten years ago. As she described how she handles exes, Ashanti bluntly stated that she shuts that person out. “That chapter is closed and you just move on.”
Something about their paths crossing once more in 2021 at Fat Joe and Ja Rule’s Verzuz battle had Nelly getting Ashanti’s number from DJ City. When they first started to reconnect, Ashanti was hesitant. “I had to really, like, be real with myself, like, ‘Do I have feelings for him again?'” At this point, Nelly was already one of her exes she hadn’t planned on speaking to ever again, but was “pleasantly surprised” he was at the event.
Three years later, the couple is happily married and expecting their first child. Nelly has four children: two kids with his ex Channetta Valentine, and he adopted his sister’s two kids after her death in 2005. In April, Ashanti confirmed they were expecting their first child together. As for what those wedding festivities will entail, Ashanti said it needs to have a beach, sunshine, and palm trees.
After knowing each other for over 20 years, Ashanti said their growth has been “superb” on both ends. Now, both she and Nelly are more mature than they used to be when they would argue and not speak for days.
Now, they don’t let the little things get to them. Instead, they find a resolution, apologize, kiss, and make up. “I think just we both are so passionate about working and about building [a] family,” she said in her interview. “We are so, so aligned.”
When asked how she knew she was pregnant, Ashanti said besides being “kind of late,” that her “fiancé kind of blurted something out on stage.” After Nelly blurted “something” out, Ashanti hadn’t even taken a pregnancy test to confirm it. That was back in December, and she shared the clip on her Instagram, explaining that she was just trying to fix her dress’ pendant adornment that was on her stomach.
As for the sex of their baby, Ashanti revealed that she and Nelly know but that they’re keeping it a secret. She noted in the interview that the two of them are very private people and want to keep it that way.
