Destiny’s Child: Looking Back At Their 9/11 Tribute

Author Autumn Hawkins
September 11th 10:56 AM
NEW ORLEANS, LA - FEBRUARY 03: Kelly Rowland, Beyonce Knowles and Michelle Williams of Destiny's Child perform during the Pepsi Super Bowl XLVII Halftime Show at Mercedes-Benz Superdome on February 3, 2013 in New Orleans, Louisiana.

In the wake of the devastating terror attack on September 11, 2001, a benefit concert called “The Concert for New York City” was held in Madison Square Garden. It featured several stars performing in honor of the civilians and first responders who tragically lost their lives weeks prior. Paul McCartney and his team organized the benefit where he, Billy Joel Jay-Z, the Backstreet Boys, Elton John, and R&B trio Destiny’s Child performed.

Destiny’s Child put on a touching performance as they sang two songs from their 2001 Survivor album, “Emotion” and “Gospel (medley).” Each of these songs demonstrates the strength, unity, and pride of New York City and America in the face of the historic tragedy.

Other highlights of the show included, “New York State Of Mind” by Billy Joel, “Won’t Get Fooled Again” by The Who, “Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters” by Elton John, and “Freedom” by Paul McCartney. The benefit concert was broadcast live and was later nominated for two Daytime Emmys IMBd.

Where Is Destiny’s Child Now?

In recent years, there have been rumors that the R&B group would get back together. The recent speculation began when the official Destiny’s Child website got an update commemorating their self-titled debut album. The album’s anniversary was February 17, 1998. At the time, Williams was not yet a part of the group. On the website, it features a large 25 with footage of when Beyoncé brought out Rowland and Williams for her 2018 Super Bowl performance. The Super Bowl performance was also their most recent appearance together. Underneath the large 25 is “new website coming soon.” Since Beyoncé requested that for the remainder of her Renaissance Tour her fans wear silver, which so happens to also be the color of a 25th anniversary, fans are hoping that this is a signal that the group will tour. Destiny’s Child has not reunited in the studio since their last album, Destiny Fulfilled in 2004.

Today, we share a clip of Destiny’s Child performing “Emotion” and “Gospel (medley)” as we remember those who lost their lives 22 years ago on this day. Take a look at the performance here.

Beyoncé: 5 Destiny's Child Songs We Want Her To Perform On The 'Renaissance Tour'

  • "Say My Name" 'The Writing's on the Wall' (1999)

“Say My Name” is a Destiny’s Child classic and all OG Destiny’s Child fans would love to here Beyoncé perform it on tour. The song won a Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals and Best R&B Song in 2001. The song is from the group’s 1999 album The Writing’s on the Wall.

  • "Solider" 'Destiny Fulfilled' (2004)

“Solider” would be a great addition to the set list as Beyoncé has already displayed that she has an army-inspired custom IVY Park outfit for the tour. This record is from the group’s final album Destiny Fulfilled which was released in 2004. The song features rappers T.I. and Lil Wayne. The record was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Melodic Rap Performance in 2006.

  • "Bootylicious" 'Survivor' (2001)

Imagine a mash-up of “Thique” and “Bootylicious,” an absolute dream. “Bootylicious” is on the group’s 2001 album Survivor. A remix of the song with Missy Elliott is featured in the 2001 musical film drama Carmen: A Hip Hopera which Beyoncé stars in.

  • "Cater 2 U" 'Destiny Fulfilled' (2004)

We could definitely see a “Cater 2 U” being performed before or after “Plastic Off The Sofa.” The song is found on Destiny Fulfilled which was released in 2004. The song was nominated for Best R&B Song and Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals in 2006.

  • "Bills Bills Bills"

Well, since Beyoncé told us to quit our jobs on “Break My Soul” she can at least perform “Bills Bills Bills” because someone has to pay them, right? “Bills Bills Bills” is from Destiny Child’s second studio album The Writing’s on the Wall. The song was the group’s first No. 1 hit.
