A new electric vehicle plant will bring 7,500 jobs to North Carolina. It will be the first car manufacturing plant in the state as well as the largest announcement of economic development in the history of the state. The facility is for VinFast which is a subsidiary of the Vietnamese Vingroup.
The plant will be located in Chatham County which is Southwest of Raleigh, at the Triangle Innovation Point. The first phase of VinFast’s main manufacturing center will occupy a 1,977-acre plot, with three main parts: the production and assembly of electric cars and buses, batteries for electric vehicles, and ancillary industries for suppliers. According to Gov Cooper VinFast will invest around $2 billion in phase 1. Construction will begin this year with an anticipated opening set for July of 2024. Production estimates for the electric vehicle plant in North Carolina are around 150,000 per year.
