Americans have a lot to be anxious about lately. According to the personal finance website WalletHub, 87% of Americans feel “anxious” or “very anxious” about inflation. That is just one of the issues of concern. But, what makes people happy?
WalletHub conducted a study to find out the Happiest States In America. Interestingly enough, North Carolina ranks #20 on that list. WalletHub wanted to know in what areas do Americans have the highest satisfaction with life. They looked at all 50 states and used 30 key indicators of happiness. The indicators ranged from adequate sleep to depression to income growth and to unemployment.
Teaching Professor at Johns Hopkins University, Dr. Dylan Selterman notes that money is important. It helps achieve basic needs (food, water, shelter) or other things that would bring happiness. He states having money does not make people happy, but spending money in strategic ways can make people happy.
For example, he explains people tend to be happier when they spend money on others, or on fun or meaningful activities. He says research shows that having wealth/money does not necessarily mean happiness.
