Bryan HutchinsI visited my girlfriend's home recently and it was EVERYTHING! From the 12-foot walls to the extra-long driveway to the entertainment room in the basement, it was magical and what she dreamed of. But, she admits it's all compliments of her interior designer.
My friend is pretty creative and says she needed help when it came to designing the interior of her home. She did her homework and researched to find an interior designer who understood her goals and could bring them to life without breaking the bank. She says she had a specific request for an African-American interior designer, which she learned was a lot more challenging than she anticipated.

Out of the interior designers in the United States, roughly 2% are Black, according to job search company Zippia, So, my friend really had to fine-tune just what she wanted in an interior designer. Home design company MyDomaine offers a few pointers on what you (the client) need to consider in seeking an interior designer.
- Collaboration - The interior designer should want to work with you in helping to create you design. If not hands on, then in some way establish communication.
- Rule Of Three - Have three potential interior designers to choose from or at least two. Out of them one will stick out.
- Preparation - As the client, you should come prepared with samples of your colors, or examples, plans or drawings of what you like.
- Budget - You should have a budget in mind so that there are no surprises. It'll be important to set expectations.
While the options for Black interior designers may be few, there are some well-known ones in the Carolinas. Whether your taste is classic, contemporary, modern or eclectic, these designers are likely to fit the bill.
