The Best Ice Cream In Every State
What is the “Best Ice Cream” in every state? With a heatwave gripping the nation, people are looking for ways to cool off. Eating ice cream is a favorite summer pastime and now Food & Wine is giving us the best ice cream in every state.
If you’re headed to the west coast, hit up Gunther’s in Sacramento. Try the Black Walnut, lemon custard, or one of their fruit freezes. While in Florida, Dasher & Crank has over 400 ice cream flavors for you to enjoy. Located in Miami’s Wynnwood neighborhood, try their top seller, the Ube Macapuno, a deeply colorful coconut ice cream made with Filipino purple yams. Hitting up Hawaii this summer? Black Sheep Cream Co. boasts a flavorful pistachio ice cream, a beautiful rocky road served with roasted marshmallows on top, and great affogatos for keeping caffeinated on hot days.
But what about something more local?
North Carolina’s crown went to Two Roosters Ice Cream. Created by Jerrod Plummer Two Roosters began as a mobile venture but has grown to two stores in Raleigh as well as a stand at the Durham Bulls Ballpark. One of the most unique flavors is roasted strawberry and honey.
And we can’t forget South Carolina. Food & Wine recognized Off Track ice Cream in Charleston as the best of the Palmetto State. Off Track opened in 2019 and features both regular and vegan ice cream. Ingredients are heavily focused on local, starting with the milk of course, alongside orange blossom honey from Charleston’s Apis Mercantile, flaky sea salt harvested just minutes from town at Bulls Bay, and much more.
I have to say I was shocked over Georgia’s pick- a Decatur-based gelato shop Cremalosa. While I have not tried it, it is surprising to me that Savannah institution Leopold’s didn’t take that spot. Just a few months ago I waited close to an hour and a half in line there. And while I don’t think I’d wait that long again, it is very good ice cream!
