Summer Game Fest, An Entirely Digital Gaming Event and Celebration from May through August 2020
Summer Game Fest is one of, if not the biggest gaming announcement made this year. Summer Game Fest was just recently announced and will take place from May through August 2020. Summer Game Fest is a new industry wide celebration of video games, similar to gaming conventions and events like E3, GDC, SXSW, and Gamescom. Unfortunately all of these events were restricted to online-only, or just flat out cancelled. Unlike those gaming conferences which only last a few days and relies heavily on in-person experiences, Summer Game Fest has been built to function solely as an all-digital gaming event. And like we said, it runs over a span of three months, making it the very first gaming festival of its kind.
Summer Game Fest will bring breaking news, in=game events, and free playable content from comapnies across the industry both big and small, including companies such as Bethesda, Blizzard Entertainment, CD Projekt Red, Electronic Arts (EA), Riot Games, Microsoft, Sony, and Square Enix.
Gaming events throughout Summer Game Fest will be streaming via all major channels, including Facebook, Mixer, Twitch, and YouTube. When it comes to details for specific events held by the publishers themselves. those announcements will be made directly from those publishers. Platforms such as Steam and Xbox will also be offering demos and trials of some of the games within the festival for a limited time. The Steam Game Festival: Summer Edition is set to run from June 9th-14th 2020.
Geoff Keighley who will be acting as both curator and host for pre and post-shows throughout Summer Game Fest spoke out about video games during these times, saying, “In these uncertain and challenging times, it’s more important than ever that video games serve as a common and virtual connection point between us all. Summer Game Fest is an organizing principle that promises fans a whole season of video game news and other surprises from the comfort of home.”
Summer Game Fest, being the first ever festival of its kind will open many new doors for the gaming industry and proves it will maintain its speed and continue thriving even through a pandemic.
