Charlotte Plans $1.5M Push to Bring Back CIAA Tournament for 2028-2030
Charlotte city leaders are moving forward with plans to bid for the CIAA basketball tournament for the 2028–2030 cycle, aiming to continue the city’s long-standing connection with the event. The bid, led by the Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority (CRVA) in partnership with local government and businesses, is due by Apr. 15. CIAA officials are expected to conduct a site visit in June, with a final decision anticipated later in the summer.
“We view this bid not only as a chance to host the tournaments but as an opportunity to strengthen and renew the bond between the CIAA and the Charlotte community,” said CRVA CEO Steve Bagwell.
A key part of the bid is an agreement to lock in Spectrum Center as the lone venue for all tournament happenings and streamline events that have been previously shared with Bojangles Coliseum. This change should help drive attendance and eligibility for funding from the state. Tie-in events would also move to Spectrum Center, which would improve the fan experience.
The city’s financial commitment includes at least $1.5 million for scholarships and fundraising, and the CRVA is pledging $1 million and looking to do more with partners in the community and state. Spectrum Center renovations worth $245 million are expected to be finished ahead of the 2025–26 NBA season, providing enhanced amenities for fans and teams alike.
City council members have voiced concerns about safety at non-sanctioned events and are calling for a detailed plan from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department. Councilman Malcolm Graham acknowledged logistical hurdles, including managing the NBA schedule and conflicts like the 2028 ACC Men’s Championship, but noted momentum is building. Councilman Ed Driggs emphasized that landing the tournament would solidify Charlotte’s status as a top-tier sports destination.
Although the formal bid has not yet been submitted, CIAA senior associate commissioner Marcus Clarke confirmed that the conference is open to receiving proposals next month. Philadelphia is also expected to compete for hosting rights.
