Charlotte: Stores Closed On Thanksgiving Day

Before the pandemic in 2020, Black Friday (the day after Thanksgiving) was a big deal to many families, and most stores had huge sales. You had to get there early in the morning to get in line, but that’s not the case anymore. Black Friday is now something that is spread out with minimal discounts, and to be honest, it isn’t as much fun as it used to be.

Black Friday Fun

My husband and I loved to take the kids on Black Friday before 2020 to enjoy a little bit of the holiday spirit, getting great discounts on items for Christmas and watching a little bit of the craziness that goes around the once-big shopping holiday.

While stores are open on Black Friday after Thanksgiving, also different since the pandemic is that so many stores are now closed on Thanksgiving Day.

What will Be Open

There are some places, of course, open in the Charlotte area on Thanksgiving Day, but most of them are gas stations, some grocery stores, convenience stores, CVS, and Walgreens.

Grocery and convenience stores that are open on Thanksgiving in the Charlotte area include:

Harris Teeter: 6 AM–2 PM
Dollar General: 7 AM–10 PM
Dollar Tree: 8 AM–5 PM
Family Dollar: 8 AM–6 PM
Food Lion: 7 AM–3 PM
Lowes Food: 6 AM–4 PM

Big Stores In Charlotte Closed on Thanksgiving Day 2024

Note: Most locally owned stores, banks, and, of course, schools are all closed on Thanksgiving Day, November 28.

Walmart

Walmart will be closed on Thanksgiving Day for the fifth year in a row, the retail giant recently announced in its holiday plans. They wrote, “Walmart stores will be closed once again on Thanksgiving Day so associates can spend the day with their families.”

In the past, Walmart was open on Thanksgiving, and shoppers were able to pick up that last-minute item for their dinners. However, since the COVID-19 pandemic, Walmart has closed for the holiday.

Target

Target will be closed on Thanksgiving, November 28, 2024. This is the fifth year in a row that Target has closed on Thanksgiving. However, on Black Friday, Target will open its stores at 6 AM on Black Friday, November 29, 2024, and stay open until midnight.

Target, like Walmart, began closing on Thanksgiving Day after the 2020 pandemic.

Many Other Stores

Stores closed on Thanksgiving around town are Aldi, BJ’s Wholesale Club, Costco, Hy-Vee, Lidl, Publix, and Sam’s Club.
