Where The Most College Football Championships Have Been Played
The Michigan Wolverines and Washington Huskies are hitting NRG Stadium in Houston Texas, for tonight’s highly anticipated college football championship game. It will be the first time since this modern-day format launched in 2014 that the grand finale is played in Houston. Here, we will take a look at the city and stadium that has hosted the most college football bowl championship games.
The states of California, Texas, and Florida have hosted the most bowl championships in college football. However, Atlanta is the site of next year’s big game; that will make A-Town the first city and stadium to host the championship twice. That is because Tampa, and Miami each hosted in Florida. Los Angeles and San Francisco each had a turn in California. Finally, Arlington, Texas (home of the Dallas Cowboys) held the first bowl championship on January 12, 2015, when Ohio State topped Oregon by the score of 42 – 20.
That begs the next question.
Which Team Has Won The Most College Football Championships?
Again, since the official format change ten years ago, it’s the Alabama Crimson Tide that has held the trophy high the most. In fact, Alabama has made it to the finals five out of the past nine years. They were one play away from making it six out of ten. “The Tide has more bowl wins than 10 of the teams among the top 25 in appearances all-time,” College Sports Wire recently explained.
The Clemson Tigers have won twice (made it four times), and the Georgia Bulldogs have won twice (and most recently).
In totality, the Orange Bowl in Miami is one of the longest-standing bowl games and sites in the history of college football. It has been played annually in the Miami, Florida area since 1935. This year, much of the feedback around the college football playoff was that the Rose Bowl should always be the site of the national championship game. With the history, the weather conditions, and the all-around landscape of the facility (including the work of art field design), it’s hard to argue against the Pasadena site hosting each year.
Regardless, this year college football will crown a new king, with tonight’s national championship game. Though Washington was the champion in 1991 and Michigan last won in 1997, neither team has won it since the College Football Playoff National Championship structure took over.
