FAQ’s To Help Non Registered Voters Get Registered

Now that we’ve gotten that out of the way, I still want to share a few things about those that may have felonies or serving sentences for certain crimes. In some states, those that are currently incarcerated can vote in some circumstances.
For those who are convicted of a felony, according to the NCSBE, you can’t register to vote until you “have completed all of the terms of your felony sentence, including any probation or parole.” The upside is there are circumstances where you can. Also according to the NCSBE, “you are edible to register to vote if you are serving an extended term of probation, post-release supervision, or parole, you have outstanding fines, fees, or restitution, and you do not know of another reason that your probation, post-release supervision, or parole was extended.”
For those that have completed your felony sentence or let’s say you received a pardon, you are indeed eligible to not only vote but to register as well. Let’s say you are currently incarcerated and its not a felony sentence, you can register. You just need to use the address where you intend to live post-release. If you don’t have an address, according to the NCSBE, you can use the jail or prison address.
If you live in SC, the rules are slightly different, but not too much. If you are convicted of a felony, you have to have served your time completely. That included probation or parole. Now, you do have to reapply for voter registration. I would recommend getting something from your releasing officer to show that you have fully completed your sentence and have the right to register to vote. If you have a right to vote, it’s important to exercise it. This could be the most important election of our lifetime! Happy Voting!
