It's about that time of year for me. The summer is about done, schools are back open and my internal clock to get things done is winding down. So, what better way to "wind down" before the hustle and bustle revs back up than to spend a few days at the spa?

I started my hunt for which one will give me the most bang for my buck. There are a few other factors I like to check off my list when in search of the perfect spa.

  1. First things first - the cost. After all, I don't want to create more stress by booking out of my price point. I honestly ask myself 'Do I want to go into debt to relax?'  Well, it depends on the other two factors.
  2. The second factor I consider when choosing a spa is location. Is it somewhere nearby where I can drive and make it a day trip? I prefer any drive less than four hours. Or is it a unique enough spot where it's worth investing in a flight? (Considering, that yet another expense)
  3. And lastly, I consider the overall experience at the spa. Does it have all the amenities I like? Outside of the actual massage, will I have access to the steam room, sauna, pool, scenery (the view), and lunch? Do they offer a range of services that include skincare and overall wellness? What is the energy of the spa? I prefer laid-back, peaceful with smells that promote peace -- like eucalyptus, lavender, bergamot, and patchouli.

In my search, I got some help from O. Christine. I am excited to share some of her finds for some of the best Black-owned spas in the U.S. One of which is right here in the Carolinas. So, if you're on a journey to find inner peace or are continuing your search for wellness, than perhaps some of these Black-owned spas will inspire you. Check out her full list here to see all 21 spas in the U.S.
