The most important thing to you is keeping your family safe. Criminals are everywhere, unfortunately. The existence of public state sex offender registries may be well known, but this information is rarely reported on a national level through official channels. In North Carolina, as in many states, sex offenders are registered.

SafeHome.org compiles sex offender data from all 50 states every year to determine which regions have the largest registries. In addition, the change in offenses across the nation is also being examined. Over the past year, they found that the number of registered offenders has declined slightly. Approximately 767,000 people are left today, down from about 780,000 in 2021.

Our research found that there are more than 760,000 people listed on state sex offender registries (as of April 2022). Based on our analysis, the number of registered sexual offenders in the U.S. has fallen by just under two percent since 2021. The following table shows the number of sex offenders registered in North Carolina in 2022. We also included some additional state results below as well.

  • Texas

    Amount registered: 99,160 offenders 
    With nearly 100,000 offenders, Texas has the largest list of registered sex offenders in the country.

  • California

    Amount registered: 59,886 offenders
    California ranks second with nearly 60,000.

  • New York

    Amount registered: 42,611 offenders
    New York had the third-most registered sex offenders, with about 43,000 people in its state registry.

  • Michigan

    Amount registered: 39,958 offenders
    In the top ten states for registered sex offenders is the state of Michigan.

  • Illinois

    Amount registered: 33,019 offenders

  • Oregon

    Amount registered: 32,178 offenders
    Oregon, which ranks sixth for the overall number of sex offenders, ranks first for sex offenders per 100,000 residents. In Oregon, some sex offenders are required to be listed on the state registry for life, and there are more than 25 offenses that can lead to registration. These factors could contribute to its large registry rolls.

    Amount registered: 31,922 offenders

  • Wisconsin

    Amount registered: 26,106 offenders

  • North Carolina

    Amount registered: 26,044 offenders

     

  • Pennsylvania

    Amount Registered: 25,196 offenders

  • South Carolina

    Amount registered: 15,589 offenders
