HBCUs, or Historically Black Colleges and Universities, are compared each year to determine the best in the country. Multiple HBCUs are compared based on their quality of education. Many represent their HBCU until the day they die and promote theirs as being the BEST school out. But, the national rankings do answer a lot of questions and give bragging rights.

U.S. News has its list of the best HBCUs for the 2022-2023 school year. These HBCUs are compared only to one another. There are a total of 77 schools that were evaluated in the ranking. One school from South Carolina and another from North Carolina both ranked in the top 10 best HBCUs for the 2022-2023 school year. The schools both tied for the No. 9 spot. Can you guess which local HBCUs made the list? Probably, but check out the top 10 HBCUs for the 2022-2023 school year below.

1. Spelman College

Located in Atlanta, GA, Spelman College took home the No. 1 spot for best HBCU in the country for the 2022-2023 school year. For the Fall 2021 semester, the school had 2,417 undergrads enrolled. This is the 16th year in a row that the school has made the top of the list!

2. Howard University

Howard University came in at No. 2 for this year's list. Howard is another HBCU that has always remained in the top of the list over the last few years. For the Fall 2021 semester, there were 8,964 undergrads enrolled.

3. Tuskegee University

Coming in at No. 3 is Tuskegee University located in Alabama. For the Fall 2021 semester, there were 2,184 undergrad students enrolled.

4. Morehouse College

Located near Spelman College, its sister school, Morehouse College is an all male HBCU in Atlanta, GA. For the 2021 Fall semester, Morehouse had a total of 2,554 undergraduates enrolled.

5. Xavier University of Louisiana

Xavier University of Louisiana located in New Orleans comes in at No. 5 on the top HBCUs list. This private institution has nearly 50% of its classes with fewer than 20 students. In Fall 2021, the undergraduate enrollment was 2,755.

6. Hampton University

Hampton University, located in Virginia, is a private HBCU and former graduates include those such as Booker T. Washington and Alberta Williams King, Martin Luther King, Jr.'s mother. For the Fall 2021 semester, there were 2,863 undergrads enrolled.

7. Florida A&M University

Florida A&M University, also FAMU, in located in Tallahassee, Florida. For the Fall 2021 semester, there were 7,301 undergraduate students enrolled in the university

8. Delaware State University

Founded in 1891, Delaware State is located in Dover, DE. They have over 50% of classes with fewer than 20 students in them. For the Fall 2021 semester, there were 4,399 undergrad students enrolled.

9. Claflin University

Located in Orangeburg, South Carolina, Claflin University comes in at No. 9. This private institution was founded in 1869 and one of the top HBCUs in the state of South Carolina.

9. North Carolina A&T State University

North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University ties with Claflin at No. 9. Taking over for the Carolinas. North Carolina A&T is located in Greensboro, North Carolina and had a total of 11,596 undergraduate students for their Fall 2021 semester.
