The Carolina’s have a strong history in basketball and still have the recent success to back it up. And 2022 is no different. North and South Carolina basketball teams are making a splash in their respective tournaments with 5 advancing to the Sweet 16. The men’s games tip-off beginning Thursday with the women’s teams taking the court beginning Friday.

Is your bracket busted yet? I saw somewhere that this is the lowest average seed in a men’s basketball tournament ever, so chances are it is. At least my national champion (not a team on this list) is still in the mix. Not just North and South Carolina teams are well represented in the games, the Atlantic Coast Conference has 4 teams in just the women’s tournament. The ACC also has 3 men’s teams still dancing.

How many will make it to the Elite 8? There are some tough matchups but in this unpredictable postseason, anything is possible.

North And South Carolina Sweet 16 Teams

  • Men's Teams

  • 2. Duke Blue Devils

Most people had the number 2 seed Blue Devil’s advancing this far. Duke notched double-digit wins this weekend against Cal State Fullerton and Michigan State. They will take on Texas Tech Thursday night in San Fransisco.

  • 8. North Carolina Tar Heels

This is one probably only UNC fans predicted. The Tarheels took down the number one seed and defending champion Baylor Bears in the second round. They easily beat a 9 seed Marquette to advance to that game. The next challenge for the Tar Heels? A 4th seed UCLA Friday night in Philadelphia.

  • Women's Teams

  • 1. NC State Wolfpack

After two blowout wins against Longwood and Kansas State the top-seeded Wolfpack face a tough challenge in Notre Dame. The Irish were the last team (and only ACC team this year) to beat the Pack. Can NC State pull out a win and advance past the Sweet 16 for the first time since 1998? This team has high expectations. The match-up tips off Saturday at 11:30 am from Bridgeport.

  • 1. South Carolina Gamecocks

The top seed in the entire tournament didn’t score a lot of points in their win against Miami but it was enough to advance. The Gamecocks easily beat Howard 79-21 in the first round so they can score a lot of points. They will take on the next team on this list the North Carolina Tar Heels in Greensboro Friday at 7pm.

  • 5. North Carolina Tar Heels

Wins over a 12th seed Stephen F Austin a 4th seed Arizona set the Tar Heels up for a battle of the Carolinas. The overall number 1 seed Gamecocks will be their toughest test yet. Both teams will most likely be well represented in Greensboro on Friday.

  • ACC Teams Still Dancing

  • 10. Miami Hurricanes Men's Basketball

One of four double-digit seeds to advance to the Sweet 16 is the Miami Hurricanes. They took out a 2nd seeded Auburn who has been a front-runner in college basketball all season long. Miami also beat a 7 seed USC. They are actually the higher seed in their Sweet 16 matchup playing an 11 seed Iowa State team.

  • 1. Louisville Women's Basketball

The ACC has a pair of number one seeds with NC State and the Louisville Cardinals. The Cardinals easily beat the 16th seeds Albany and topped Gonzago 68-59 to advance. They will play the 4th seed Tennessee Saturday at 4pm in Wichita, KS.

  • 5. Notre Dame Women's Basketball

The Fighting Irish were on fire scoring 108 points against a 4th seeded Oklahoma. They will now travel to Bridgeport where they will take on the top-seeded ACC foe NC State Wolfpack who they did previously beat in South Bend earlier this season. You can catch the game Saturday morning at 11:30.
