Publix Super Markets snapped up a spot at 601 N. Tryon St. in uptown Charlotte. The price? $4.8 million. The deal closed Jan. 29, ending a lease that kicked off back in December 2019. The Florida grocer bought the site from 10th and Tryon Partners out of Virginia Beach, Virginia. Mecklenburg County records, filed Thursday, confirm the transaction.

The company told The Charlotte Observer about the sale but wouldn't share more. Records show the lease got terminated the same day the purchase went through.

The Lakeland, Florida, chain wants to build a 28,000-square-foot store at the 10 Tryon building. That sits on the northwest corner where Tryon meets Ninth Street. When it opens, uptown will have three grocery stores.

Plans have dragged since the first announcement. The project was supposed to include 175,000 square feet of office space in a 15-floor tower, The Charlotte Observer reported back in 2021.

Publix has spread across the Charlotte region since its first North Carolina store opened in Ballantyne in 2014. Last year brought three new stores, pushing the chain to 26 locations in the Charlotte market at Arboretum. That followed openings in East Charlotte and on Carmel Commons Boulevard.

Three more stores are in the works. A 50,325-square-foot spot in Wesley Chapel will pop up on the southeast corner where Weddington and Waxhaw Indian Trail Roads meet in Union County.

A 68,000-square-foot store is coming to the corner of Sharon and Colony Roads in SouthPark. Meanwhile, a 50,000-square-foot store in Matthews will anchor the 82-acre Cadia Matthews mixed-use development at Stallings and Idlewild Roads.

The Matthews store should open in late 2027.
