Classroom Central Launches School Supply Lockers at Charlotte Schools with Charlotte FC

Starting Jan. 8, 2025, Nation's Ford Elementary School will be the first location to get Learning Lockers, a new supply program giving teachers free access to classroom essentials. Teaming up with Charlotte FC, this new system puts needed supplies directly in schools. These smart vending stations keep everyday basics and student necessities within easy reach for teachers.

The hard truth driving this initiative: Over 50% of students come to class without basic school supplies. Many families can't afford to buy them.

"An average family spends upwards of $700 sending their kids back to school, and about $200 of that was school supplies. And, you know, for a lot of families, it's just not feasible," said Emily Cook to WCCB Charlotte.

North Carolina's education numbers tell a troubling story. The state ranks 48th in student funding, $4,695 below national averages. Only half of the students meet expected learning goals. Locally, the problems are getting worse. By the end of 2023, over 5,000 students faced homelessness. In areas they help, poverty affects 54% of families.

The organization helps six school districts and 245 schools. Their work makes a real difference. They've given out more than $100 million in supplies to local schools. The community really steps up to help. Every year, 3,600 volunteers donate their time. Between their free store and mobile unit, they keep finding new ways to support teachers.

If these first lockers prove successful at Nation's Ford, they plan to add them at other schools to help fix supply shortages.
