‘Living Single’s’ Thanksgiving episode arrives on episode 12 of season two and has enough chaos to distract you from your own table this year. A feature about the life of Queen Latifah is in development as the first in a series of independently financed hip-hop biopics produced by Flavor Unit Entertainment, Westbrook Studios, and Jesse Collins Entertainment. According to IMDB, the film will trace Latifah’s rise to fame as a rapper, singer, and actress who has earned Emmy, Grammy, and Golden Globe awards. HarbourView Equity Partners is backing the project, along with future biopics highlighting other legendary hip-hop figures.

What do we know about the Queen Latifah biopic so far?

As of now, no announcements have been made regarding the writer or director of the Latifah biopic. Variety reports that the film’s producers include Latifah and Shakim Compere from Flavor Unit Entertainment, Will Smith and Miguel Melendez from Westbrook Studios, and Jesse Collins and Dionne Harmon from Jesse Collins Entertainment. The latter company is known for producing BET’s miniseries The New Edition Story and The Bobby Brown Story.

“We all came into this industry together, and Hip Hop has shaped each and every one of us,” Latifah and Compere said in a statement about the project and collaboration. “Hip Hop’s impact has expanded beyond just music and has created a lasting impression on culture and society overall. It is a dream to collaborate with friends and colleagues who not only share this understanding but can tell the stories that formed the backdrop of our lives.”

The excitement around the biopic is building among fans. In a Reddit thread, many shared their thoughts on the news. “Well deserved! Can’t wait to see it come to life!” one user wrote. Another added, “I don’t think we really need anymore biopics, but this one I will definitely be watching.” Personally, I’m just relieved Lifetime isn’t handling this project, given their history with biopics. Need I remind you of the Aaliyah or Wendy Williams biopic they aired?

Latifah, born Dana Elaine Owens, burst onto the scene in 1989 with her debut album All Hail the Queen. Over the years, she’s released seven studio albums and expanded her career into acting, beginning with roles in Spike Lee's Jungle Fever and House Party 2 in 1991. Throughout the past three decades, she’s appeared in films like Taxi, Hairspray, and Bringing Down the House, collecting a Golden Globe, Emmy, and Grammy along the way. Most recently, Latifah has starred in CBS' The Equalizer since 2021.

Here's to hoping more details are released soon.
