67 Years Ago Dorothy Counts Walked Through the Doors of Harding High School in Charlotte
Do you know Dorothy Counts? Well, on this day (September 4) 67 years ago, she became one of the first African American students to attend Charlotte’s all white school, Harry Harding High School. At the young age of 15, Counts became a staple in Charlotte’s history.
Who is Dorothy Counts?
Dorothy Counts was born on March 25, 1942, in Charlotte, North Carolina. She grew up near Johnson C. Smith University as both of her parents worked. As her parents worked in the school system, education was a large part of her family.
On September 4, 1957, she was one of four black students enrolled in all white schools throughout the district. She was the only one to attend Harry Harding High School. This decision broke the color barrier in the area to allow them to attend schools that previously denied them due to their skin color. This decision also led to multiple issues with locals who did not want this and Charlotte was still segregated at the time.
When Counts arrived at Harding High School, there was an angry crowd to greet her. Multiple people screamed, threw rocks, and were angry that the decision to integrate was happening.
The situation was intense but helped push us to where we are today. Now, Dorothy Counts continues to reside in Charlotte and is a counselor with Child Care Resources. She also attends Johnson C. Smith University occasionally as it is still part of her history.
