Tyler Perry Is Backing A 93-Year-Old South Carolina Woman
Billionaire media mogul Tyler Perry is a fighter. And that’s why he has no problem supporting a 93-year-old South Carolina woman fighting to keep her home and land.
Josephine Wright lives in Hilton Head Island, S.C. Her home is on land linked to her family since the Civil War. According to WSAV, Georgie’s developer Bailey Point Investment Group is suing her. The group wants her to sell her 1.8-acre parcel of land that is near a neighborhood the group is developing.
Perry got wind of her plight after seeing it on a local news outlet. After hearing the story, he had no issues coming to her aide and posted an interview clip of Wright on his Instagram page.
Others Join The Fight
Since posting it, several other celebrities have joined in to stand with Wright and support her. R&B singer Fantasia told Perry to ‘count her in.’ Philadelphia rapper Meek Mill has offered his support as well. He wrote, “Corporate bullying at its finest…”. The Hilton Head Island Packet reported one of the first to donate to support Wright’s effort was NBA star Kyrie Irving. He donated $40,000 to the GoFundMe campaign Wright’s granddaughter set up.
Modern Day David & Goliath
The battle over land drama started earlier this year after the town gave the okay for Bailey Point’s plan to build a 147-unit development behind Wright’s historic home. It’s the home Wright says has always served as a place for family gatherings which includes 40 grandchildren, 50 great-grandchildren and 16 great-great-grandchildren.
After Wright refused the company’s offer to buy her home and land, Bailey Point sued.
The lawsuit, obtained by The Post, says part of Wright’s property is overlapping on the 29-acre panel. Bailey Point says the ‘overlap’ has caused significant delay in its construction. And the group also claims that delay is costing them time and money.
Meanwhile, Wright isn’t budging too much. Her attorneys argue the company is intimidating and harassing the matriarch. Her granddaughter says they have already addressed some of the company’s concerns including removing a satellite dish and storage shed Bailey Point said were on its land.
The GoFundMe was set up to cover the family’s legal expenses. As of this writing, over $150,000 has been raised.
