Marques Houston Explains Marrying Wife At 19 When He Was 38
Marques Houston is famously known as Roger from the sitcom Sister, Sister starring Tia and Tamera Mowry. Houston also went into music where he had hits such as “Clubbin,” “Naked,” “Body,” and more. However, he has come up in recent years not due to his acting or music career but because of some of his personal choices. Houston married his wife Miya when she was 19 and he was 38. Many people believed that because of their nearly 20-year age gap that the relationship was inappropriate. Since they married when she was only 19, many believe they began dating before she became a legal adult. Now, Houston has finally addressed the claims.
Houston clarified that there were no romantic feelings towards Miya before she was 18. “No conversation and no, really, connection,” he said in an interview. “Me and my wife’s situation is a little different.” The actor stated he and Miya met through “mutual friends.”
“People don’t understand it. And, of course, I got a lot of backlash for marrying someone that was 19,” said the singer. “And, you know, when we did finally start to talk, I was like, ‘This woman is like me.'”
He explained the uniqueness of their relationship compared to his previous ones.
“For one, we had a spiritual connection, and I feel like that’s the most important thing.” Both Houston and Miya are Jehovah’s Witnesses.
“And being able to start being around her,” he added, “we connected through music and her spirit, her kindness, her heart. Reminds me a lot of my mom, and we connected on so many different levels.” One commenter mentioned, “So he met at her at 17, and kept his eye on her until she was ‘of age?'” Another pointed out, “His PR should’ve stopped this interview. It made the situation worse.” Yet another added this bit of perspective: “Imagine your daughter bringing a staff member to prom with her.”
