Can Sexually Transmitted Infections Return?
First off sexually transmitted infections are more common than we think. The CDC estimates there are over 110 million sexually transmitted infections among men and women in the United States. The alarming number is 20 million new cases each year. STDs can return for several reasons. You may not have taken the right antibiotic for the specific STD you have, or you may have taken the right drug but didn’t complete the treatment as prescribed. It’s also possible that the STD is passed back to you by an untreated partner. It is possible for some, but not all STDs to go away by themselves. But just know that STDs can exist for months, years, or the rest of your life. If you could have been exposed to an STD, the best thing to do is get tested and not hope it goes away.
No matter if you’re using the term STI or STD, they basically the same thing. As a married person would you still get tested with your spouse or significant other? With so many men on the down low afraid to come out, who can you trust? The three most common STDs reported cases are chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis. A nearly 30% increase in these reportable STDs between 2015 and 2019. The sharpest increase was in cases of syphilis among newborns which nearly quadrupled between 2015 and 2019. During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, stats skyrocketed by the end of that year.
