Here’s How To Get Help With Heating Bills In Mecklenburg County

If you live in Mecklenburg County and are having trouble paying winter heating bills, there is help. The Department of Social Services (DSS) energy assistance program is now accepting applications.

DSS'  Low-Income Energy Assistance Program or LIEAP has started to accept applications. If you have a low-income household and have immediate energy needs, this program is for you.

LIEAP is for senior citizens ages 60 and older or disabled individual who already receive help from the N.C. Division of Aging and Adult Services. Residents can apply for LIEAP through March 31. Applicants DO NOT have to be behind on their energy bills to receive assistance. Payments are one-time in the amount of $300, $400 or $500 based on the heating source.

Applicants must meet these guidelines to apply:

  • Meet income guidelines (at or below 130% of the Federal Poverty Limit)
  • Be responsible for the bill
  • Provide account number
  • Show proof of income
  • Cash resources of $2,,250 or below

Applicants are required interview. So with that, applicants will need to provide identification, utility bill, social security number and proof of income.

If approved, energy assistance payment will be made directly to the applicants utility company.
