Local North Carolina Hospitals Limiting Visitors Due To Viruses

Local North Carolina hospital system Atrium Health is limited visitors to hospitals as of November 16, 2022. According to a press release this move was made out of concern for the health and well-being of the community. They also cited the widespread prevalence of respiratory viruses such as RSV and flu among young children. As a result, Atrium is asking that children 12 and under do not visit patients who are hospitalized.  These restrictions went into effect Wednesday, Nov. 16, at 7 a.m.

The restrictions apply to hospitals in North Carolina that are part of the following health systems:

  • Atrium Health
  • Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist
  • CaroMont Health
  • Cone Health
  • Novant Health
  • Randolph Health

Additionally, these restrictions will be utilized in Atriums Emergency Departments locations.  Masks are still required for visitors. And individuals aged 13 years and over who are experiencing flu-like symptoms should also refrain from visiting patients being treated at area hospitals. Acceptions will be made for children to visit hospitalized patients under special circumstances, such as visiting a dying family member. Parents should work with their care team to make arrangements. In some hospitals and health systems, visitors may be subject to additional restrictions. For example, in most cases, visitors under the age of 18 are not allowed at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Brenner Children’s Hospital.

Atrium also wants to remind patients to only visit the emergency department if they are experiencing a serious or life-threatening illness or injury. For routine, non-life-threatening symptoms they should contact their primary care provider. They can also seek care at urgent care centers and through virtual visits.

Today they released their 2022-2023 rankings for the Top Hospitals in the nation as well as regionally in North Carolina.

Here’s how they decided on this list: “In 2022-2023 U.S. News Best Hospitals ranked hospitals in the U.S. in 15 adult specialties as well as recognized hospitals by state, metro, and regional areas for their work in 20 more widely performed procedures and conditions. Of the nearly 5,000 hospitals analyzed and 30,000 physicians surveyed, only 164 hospitals ranked in at least one of the specialties.”

One Charlotte area hospital came in at number 3 on this list. Several surrounding area institutions were also recognized. You can get the full national breakdown here. You can also see the rankings in specific specialties such as cancer care, cardiology, and others.
