These Charlotte Groups Offering Free Rides To The Polls
The Windy City does things a little differently. Since 2016, instead of "I Voted" stickers, Chicagoans receive "I Voted" wristbands. 'The Chicago Sun-Times' said the Chicago Board of Election Commissioners opted for the wristbands after complaints of stickers being stuck to walls of polling places.
Some 33% of North Carolinians have already cast their ballot during early voting, but a record number of people are expected to go to the polls on election day. With that, a number of groups are offering free rides to the polls. Charlotte Area Transit (CAT) is one of them.
On Election Day (November 8th), CATS says all bus routes will be free of a fare. Those routes include LYNX Blue Line, CityLYNK, and paratransit services. CATS will transport riders to their voter polling places. CLICK HERE for locations.
CATS is not the only group offering voters free rides to get the polls.
- A.E. Grier and Sons Funeral, Charlotte – The Charlotte funeral home will provide limousine services for the elderly and those with no transportation to the polls. For a ride call 704-377-4243.
- The Neighborhood Assistance Corporation of American (NACA) – NACA says it has 50 vans in Charlotte ready to pick up voters on Tuesday. They already assisted with early voting and will offer the same service on Election Day. Anyone who needs a ride, CLICK HERE.
- LYFT – The ride sharing app Lyft, is offering discounted rides to the polls on Election Day. On the Lyft app, enter the promo code VOTECHARLOTTE19 to get 50% off the ride (up to $10). It is also partnering with local nonprofit Urban League of Central Carolinas (Charlotte, NC). Lyft will provide rides free of cost for residents in underserved areas of the community where lack of transportation can create a barrier to voting. Lyft’s program in Charlotte is part of its nationwide initiative to help voters more easily get to polling places.
- UBER – Uber is offering 50% off roundtrip rides to and from polls (up to $7 each trip), or up to $14 for the two trips. It also applies on bikes and scooters. Uber also has an in-app poll finding feature for riders.
