North Carolina Man Escaped Jail, Still In Handcuffs

If you come across a man in handcuffs along the North Carolina coast alert the authorities. A manhunt is currently ongoing after a North Carolina man escaped a jail in Currituck county while locked in handcuffs. Now that’s an “accomplishment” of sorts.

According to a Facebook post from the Currituck County Detention Center, Corey Smith escaped before deputies could lock him in his cell. The incident occurred at around 11:10 a.m. Tuesday at the Maple Detention Center. Smith of Elizabeth City was brought in on a warrant for FTA on Felony Larceny. He was in the booking area in the process of getting a magistrate order for the warrant when he fled out the door into the wood line by the Maple Dentention Center.

Deputies are currently still searching for Smith. The North Carolina man is not believed to be armed after his escape and is still in handcuffs. He was last seen in the outfit below including jeans and a brown jacket. The update posted this morning states:

“We used drone surveillance up until 1am last night and we are continuing with multiple drone coverage and a collaboration of ground searching with multiple agencies including the coast guard helicopter this morning. Thank you for the patience for the update as we are extremely busy at this time. We are still in the same area of the initial search. “

Two North Carolina Cities Among Those With Largest Homicide Increases

Unfortunately, homicide rates are rapidly rising increasing rapidly across the U.S. Political parties are split on what to do to prevent this violence, but the problem is not solving itself. To make matters worse homicide rates have risen by an average of nearly 10% in 50 of the most populated U.S. cities. These numbers are the change between Q3 2021 and Q3 2022. WalletHub recently released a report, and two North Carolina cities were in the top 15, detailing the cities with the largest homicide increases. This list is compiled based on several different metrics (detailed below). While it may not come as a surprise, it’s still not something you want to see. And Charlotte was 5th when simply looking at the increase from Q3 2021 to 2022.

In order to determine which cities have the biggest homicide problems, WalletHub compared 50 of the largest U.S. cities based on per capita homicides in Q3 2022, as well as per capita homicides in Q3 2022 vs. Q3 2021 and Q3 2020. And the two largest North Carolina cites were among the top 15 for homicide increases. Ouch. Keep reading to see where they ranked as well as the other North Carolina city that made the list.
