The singer first previewed the single in May alongside two other songs, asking fans for their help in deciding which one should be released first. Chlöe ended up choosing “Surprise” as her fourth solo single with the help of Beyoncé.
Chlöe explained that despite “For The Night” taking the lead in the poll she is going with her gut and trusting Beyoncé, “When the Queen speaks, the Queen speaks, and that’s all I’m gonna say and that’s all that matters to me.”

The inspiration for “For The Night” is about Gunna who she has been romantically linked to despite both of them admitting that they are just friends. The 24-year-old created a Twitter Spaces earlier this month where she discussed the concept.
“Imma tell y’all a little secret about ‘For The Night,'” she said, per HotNewHipHop.”I might regret saying this, but hey, maybe it’ll help f—ing streams. I don’t even think he knows this! I wrote ‘For The Night’ about Gunna.”
“Yep, I said it bitches. I said it. So, you know.” the R&B vocalist recalled.
She continued: “I’m a songwriter. I write my own s—, I get inspired by the smallest things, so, kiss my a– (laughs). Talkin’ bout why don’t I say free this, or free that? Kiss my a–, I support in real life. Thank you!”
“But I’m single,” she clarified. “I’m single, guys. Sorry to bust bubbles, but when I wrote that song months ago, I wrote it about him.”
