J. Cole Covers NBA2K3 Dreamer Edition, First Rapper To Do So
J. Cole’s hoop dreams just got larger as he is now officially the first rapper to grace the cover of NBA2K3 Dreamer Edition.
The Grammy-winning artist will be in the MyCareer mode of the upcoming game, which will be released on Sept. 9. The ‘Dreamer Edition’ will be available exclusively at GameStop in the U.S. and Canada.
“NBA 2K has long been a place to discover new musical talent through their game and continues to be a gold standard for showcasing all things basketball culture,” J. Cole said in a statement per the NBA. “It’s been an amazing journey to not only appear on a cover of this year’s game, but to be part of the MyCAREER storyline, soundtrack and bring the Dreamer brand into NBA 2K.”
According to 2K, MyCareer mode will feature Dreamville artists Bas and Elite, who will “help players befriend J. Cole and capture the hearts and minds of The City.”
Earlier this year, Cole signed with the Scarborough Shooting Stars of the Canadian Elite Basketball League, where he played four games. The rapper left on a leave from the professional basketball team so that he could prioritize his tour. Previously, Cole played three preliminary games with the Rwanda Patriots BBC during the Basketball Africa League in 2021.
His current deal with the Scarborough Shooting Stars was apparently secured with the help of Drake. Drake, who is a huge basketball fan, had an “in”with Nicholas “Niko” Carino who is the co-founder of the Certified Lover Boy’s OVO brand. Carino is also a part-owner of the Scarborough Shooting Stars.
“You know, Dreamville and OVO are family,” Carino said. “Drake had a birthday party in L.A. last year. The conversation was, ‘I heard you have your team.’ It organically grew from there.”
“J. Cole, he’s really putting in the work,” forward Olu Famutimi said about Cole when he first joined the Shooting Stars. “Whatever we’re doing, he’s doing probably even more. Comes in early, stays late, and his drive right now, he wants to become better and wants to be known as a guy that can really hoop.”
NBA2K3 Dreamer Edition is out on 9/9.
