According to online sources 19 Walmart stores, 27 Dollar General's six Family Dollar stores, and two Target stores were fined for price gouging. On the list was four Advance Auto Parts, Pet Supplies Plus, and Compare Foods. Even Pet Smart was on the list. Price gouging in times of crisis is against North Carolina law. The locations in Mecklenburg and Union, N.C. each had to pay $15,000 in fines to the state. Two of those Dollar General stores in Mecklenburg County were the worst offenders. If you were taken advantage of please contact Attorney General Josh Stein but first fill out this form. When filling out forms like this make sure the URL ends with GOV.

Under the law, the Attorney General's Office stops price gouging and helps with consumer refunds if you paid too much. The courts may also impose civil penalties against price gougers of up to $5,000 for each violation. The law applies to all levels of the supply chain from the manufacturer to the distributor to the retailer. If you have been in the grocery store and the price listed in the aisle must match the price it rings up as. Remember if you see something, say something to North Carolinas Attorney General, here.

In North Carolina To Make Rent Off Minimum Wage You’d Have To Work This Long

This is a startling statistic. If you work a minimum wage job in North Carolina you'd have to work 106 per week to afford the average rent. That number comes from the National Low Income Housing Coalition's 2022 Out of Reach report. The purpose is to bring awareness to the issue that rent is "out of reach" to many low-income workers across the country.

According to the organization's website:

To put it into perspective nationally the Housing Wage is $25.82. That is for a modest two-bedroom rental home. A one-bedroom you would need $21.25 to afford. These statistics are based off of the idea that an individual should spend no more than 1/3 of their income on rent.

North Carolina State Facts Regarding Minimum Wage and Rent:

Where Do The Numbers Come From?

The numbers for North Carolina are shocking. It's a well-known fact that it's hard to make ends meet on minimum wage. However, the idea that you'd have to work more than 2 full-time jobs that paid minimum wage to afford rent is unacceptable. Let's take a look at some of the other statistics below and a breakdown of each of North Carolina's metropolitan areas.

All data comes from the National Low Income Housing Coalition's 2022 Out of Reach Report which can be read here.
