CHARLOTTE, NORTH CAROLINA – APRIL 21: Airplanes sit on the tarmac at Charlotte Douglas International Airport during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic on April 21, 2020 in Charlotte, North Carolina. The airport is the second largest hub for American Airlines, which will drastically reduce international flights compared to 2019.

In normal times if you just take off running on the runway or tarmac at Charlotte Douglas International Airport it won't end so well for you. But if taking a run at the Charlotte airport is something on your bucket list, you're in luck- there is a legal way you can do it! By participating in the 15th CLT 5K. The race is scheduled for Saturday, October 22nd at 7:30 am.

The course for the CLT Runway 5K takes place entirely on the airfield. Participants will navigate two miles of the runway while getting a  close-up look at the aircraft landing and taking off. And if you haven't been to the airport in while, you'll get to see the new upgrades that are taking place! While there are many 5K's you can choose to participate in, this is by far one of the most unique locations. And since it's on runways, no surprise hills at the end of the course!

The proceeds from the Runway 5K are used to fund Airport Opportunity Scholarships with Central Piedmont Community College (CPCC).  The goal is to promote careers in aviation. Last years event sold out so be sure and register early if you are interested.
