Baker Mayfield agreed to a $3.5 million pay cut, originally expecting to make $18.858 million, but can earn back what he gave up in incentives. The Cleveland Browns will pay him $10.5 million this season, which will save them over $8 million in cash and salary-cap space, according to reports. The Carolina Panthers will pay him around $5 million.
This trade for Baker Mayfield puts the starting future of the Panthers’ previous quarterback, Sam Darnold, up in the air. Last year, they picked up the fifth-year option on Darnold’s rookie contract which will earn him just under $19 million for the 2022 season. Without that fifth-year option, Darnold would have become an unrestricted free agent. Now, he is committed to Carolina for the next two seasons.
Overall, we are very excited about this! This definitely adds momentum and gives excitement to the Carolinas about football season. We’re excited to see what these boys can do this season!
